30 Million Cubic Metres of Magma Detected Under Svartsengi

Icelandic authorities have reported that nearly 30 million cubic metres of magma have accumulated beneath the Svartsengi volcanic system on the Reykjanes Peninsula, raising the likelihood of another eruption in the area that has seen repeated volcanic activity since December 2023.

Why This Matters for Photographers

The Svartsengi system — which feeds the eruption fissures near Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon area — has been the source of some of Iceland’s most dramatic and photogenic eruptions in recent years. A magma volume of this scale suggests another eruption could occur with little warning, potentially offering extraordinary photography opportunities but also posing serious safety risks. Access roads to the Reykjanes Peninsula, including routes toward Grindavík and popular coastal shooting locations, have been closed repeatedly during previous eruption episodes and could be shut again at short notice.

What Photographers Should Do

  • Monitor the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) website and app daily for eruption alerts and hazard zone updates before heading to the Reykjanes Peninsula.
  • Check road.is (vegagerdin.is) for real-time road closures, as key routes in the area can close within minutes of an eruption beginning.
  • Do not attempt to access closed or restricted zones — fines are significant and conditions can be life-threatening.
  • Have a flexible shooting plan and identify alternative locations on the peninsula that remain outside likely closure zones.
  • If an eruption begins, follow all instructions from Civil Protection authorities and do not chase lava flows without official clearance.
  • Drone operators should be aware that no-fly zones are typically imposed immediately over active eruption sites — check Icetra regulations before flying.
