The road section known as Vesturdalsvegur–Dettifoss, which provides access to Dettifoss in North Iceland, changed status from “not in service” to “unknown” (Óþekkt) on Vegagerðin’s road condition system at 06:01 on 17 October 2026. The Icelandic Road Administration has not issued a comment alongside the status change. The current designation of “unknown” means the route’s condition has not been formally confirmed as open or passable.
Why this matters for photographers
Dettifoss is one of Iceland’s most visited waterfall locations, and access depends entirely on this road remaining serviceable. Mid-October brings shortening daylight, early snowfall and the realistic possibility of ice on northern roads, all of which can affect both safety and the road’s official status at short notice. Photographers planning to visit for autumn light or long-exposure waterfall work should treat the current “unknown” status as unconfirmed access rather than a green light.
What photographers should do
- Check the live road status on road.is immediately before departing, as “unknown” can revert to “not in service” without warning.
- Contact Vegagerðin directly or monitor their social channels for any formal confirmation that the road is passable and safe for the type of vehicle you are driving.
- Carry appropriate equipment for autumn highland driving — including adequate tyre rating for potential ice — and allow extra travel time given the reduced daylight at this latitude in October.
