The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued orange weather alerts for a wide sweep of Iceland, including South Iceland, Southwest Iceland (Faxaflói), Southeast Iceland, the Central Highlands, the Westfjords, Northwest Iceland, and Northeast Iceland. Yellow alerts are in effect across remaining regions, including the Capital Region. A southerly gale or severe gale is expected locally in northwest areas, with conditions described as hazardous for vehicles sensitive to wind.
Why this matters for photographers: This warning pattern covers virtually every major landscape photography region in Iceland simultaneously. The south coast (Reynisfjara, Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss), the Eastfjords, the Westfjords, and the Vatnajökull National Park area are all under orange or yellow warnings. Travel to exposed coastal and highland locations today carries genuine risk, and conditions can deteriorate rapidly. Photographers working from campervans or vehicles with a high wind profile face particular hazard on open roads.
What photographers should do:
- Postpone non-essential outdoor photography in exposed locations until alerts are lifted — check en.vedur.is/alerts for real-time status.
- Do not attempt to shoot at cliff-top locations (Dynjandi, Látrabjarg, Reynisfjara black sand beach) in gale conditions — wave run-up and wind at these sites is unpredictable and dangerous.
- Check road.is for any road closures before driving, particularly on mountain passes and exposed coastal routes.
- If already in the field, seek shelter early — orange alerts indicate a level of severity where authorities advise against unnecessary travel.
This type of warning can pass within hours, but always wait for an official all-clear on en.vedur.is before returning to exposed locations.
