Reykjanesbraut, the main road linking Reykjavík to the Reykjanes Peninsula, will be closed to northbound traffic overnight on four consecutive nights: 28–29 September, 29–30 September, and continuing overnight into Monday and Tuesday. The closure runs from 20:00 to 07:00 each night due to milling and paving works.
Why this matters for photographers
Reykjanesbraut is the primary route for photographers travelling between Reykjavík and the Reykjanes Peninsula, including its coastal and geothermal locations. September’s long golden hours and early autumn light make overnight and pre-dawn departures common for this region. A northbound closure means the return leg into Reykjavík will be affected during those hours, which could disrupt planned shoot timings across multiple evenings.
What photographers should do
- Check the closure times carefully: the restriction applies northbound from 20:00 to 07:00 on each affected night, so plan to be back in Reykjavík before 20:00 or wait until after 07:00 to return.
- Allow extra time and check Vegagerðin (the Icelandic Road Administration) at road.is for any updates to the schedule before each night’s shoot.
- Consider basing yourself closer to the Reykjanes Peninsula for the duration of the works if your itinerary is centred on that area.
