Road to Lakagígar Craters Closed for the Season

As of 6 October 2026, the Holtsvegur–Fagrifoss road section giving access to the Lakagígar crater row in the Highlands has been listed as “Vegur ekki í þjónustu” (road not in service) by Vegagerðin, the Icelandic Road Administration. The status was recorded at 17:31 on 6 October. No further comment has been issued by the road administration.

Why this matters for photographers

Lakagígar is one of Iceland’s most striking Highland destinations, offering sweeping volcanic landscapes across an extensive crater row that rewards wide-angle and aerial composition. The October closure marks the effective end of the photography season for this area, as Highland roads are typically not returned to service until late spring or early summer. Photographers who had planned an autumn visit to the region should consider this route unavailable for the foreseeable future.

What photographers should do

  • Check the current road status on road.is before making any plans that include the Holtsvegur–Fagrifoss section, as “not in service” means the route is not maintained and should not be driven.
  • Adjust Highland itineraries accordingly — other Highland routes may also be approaching seasonal closure; verify each one individually on road.is.
  • If you are already in the region, allow extra time to confirm an alternative exit route before conditions deteriorate further into autumn.
