The road section leading to Öxi pass in East Iceland reopened on the evening of 22 October 2026, after having been listed as impassable (Ófært). Vegagerðin, the Icelandic Road Administration, has updated its status to Hálkublettir, meaning icy or slippery patches are present on the route. The road is classified as a standard public road, not a highland F-road.
Why this matters for photographers
Öxi pass sits at roughly 800 metres elevation in East Iceland and offers elevated views frequently sought by landscape photographers travelling between Berufjörður and the Héraðsdalur valley. In late October, rapidly changing conditions at this altitude are common, and Hálkublettir status indicates localised ice that may not be immediately visible. Photographers planning early-morning or twilight shoots at elevation should factor in significantly reduced grip, particularly in shaded sections of the road.
What photographers should do
- Check the live Vegagerðin road status at road.is immediately before setting out, as conditions at Öxi can change within hours at this time of year.
- Ensure your rental vehicle is fitted with winter tyres rated for icy surfaces, and confirm with your hire company that the vehicle is appropriate for this route in autumn conditions.
- Allow extra travel time and avoid stopping on the carriageway itself when icy patches are present — pull fully clear of the road before setting up any equipment.
