The Hoffellsárbrú bridge on Route 987 in Hornafjörður, South East Iceland, is closed to all traffic from 07:00 on Tuesday 29 September until 16:00 on Thursday 1 October 2026. The closure is due to scheduled maintenance work on the single-lane structure, according to Vegagerðin, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration.
Why this matters for photographers
Route 987 runs through the Hornafjörður area and provides access to photography locations along the Hoffellsá river corridor. During the closure window, that road is entirely impassable, so any shoots planned in the area will need to be rescheduled or approached via an alternative route. The late-September timing coincides with favourable autumn light and early golden-hour conditions in South East Iceland, making the disruption particularly relevant for photographers in the region this week.
What photographers should do
- Use the tolled tunnel section of Route 1 through Hornafjörður as your detour — Vegagerðin has confirmed that no tolls will be charged on that section while Hoffellsárbrú remains closed.
- Check the Vegagerðin road conditions map at road.is before setting out to confirm the bridge has reopened before attempting Route 987 on or after 1 October.
- Allow extra travel time if your itinerary passes through Hornafjörður, and observe all signage in the work area.
