Snow cover reported on road approach to Snæfellsnes

Vegagerðin, the Icelandic Road Administration, recorded a status change on the Upphéraðsvegur–Snæfellsleið road section leading to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula on 5 October 2026 at 17:51. The route moved from “Greiðfært” (easy driving) to “Snjóþekja” (snow cover). No further comment was issued by the road administration.

Why this matters for photographers

October marks the transition into autumn and early winter conditions in West Iceland, and snow cover on approach roads to Snæfellsnes can appear and clear rapidly at this time of year. The peninsula is a major destination for landscape photography — including Snæfellsjökull glacier, coastal basalt formations and black sand beaches — so road conditions directly affect access to key shooting locations. Driving on snow-covered roads without appropriate tyres or vehicle preparation carries real risk.

What photographers should do

  • Check the current road status on Vegagerðin’s live conditions map at road.is before departing, as “Snjóþekja” conditions can change within hours.
  • Confirm your rental vehicle is fitted with winter tyres; studded tyres are permitted in Iceland from 1 November, but winter rubber is advisable from October onwards on routes such as this.
  • Allow extra travel time and do not schedule tight arrival windows around golden hour or sunrise shoots until conditions have been independently verified.
