Road to Dynjandi waterfall closes due to storm snow

The road section Dynjandisheiði, which leads to Dynjandi waterfall in the Westfjords, changed status to Snjóþekja – Óveður (snow-covered, storm conditions) on 14 October 2026 at 18:01. The change was recorded by Vegagerðin, the Icelandic Road Administration. No additional comment was issued by the road authority.

Why this matters for photographers

Dynjandi is one of the most significant waterfall subjects in the Westfjords, and mid-October marks the point at which mountain roads in the region become genuinely vulnerable to early-season snowfall and storm closures. A Snjóþekja – Óveður status means the road is snow-covered and conditions are considered storm-level, making travel to the waterfall unsafe. Photographers planning an autumn shoot in the Westfjords should treat this as a firm access block, not a minor inconvenience.

What photographers should do

  • Check the current status of Dynjandisheiði directly on Vegagerðin’s road conditions map before any travel — conditions can change without notice in either direction.
  • Build contingency days into any Westfjords itinerary at this time of year; coastal routes in the region may remain passable when highland sections are closed.
  • Do not attempt the road under Óveður conditions regardless of vehicle type — this status indicates active storm weather, not simply surface snow.

The area around Dynjandi is remote and emergency response times are long. Turning back when conditions deteriorate is always the correct decision.
