Road to Dynjandi waterfall reopened with icy conditions

The road section Dynjandisheiði, which leads to Dynjandi waterfall in the Westfjords, reopened on 15 October 2026 after a period of closure. Vegagerðin (the Icelandic Road Administration) recorded the status change from “Ófært” (impassable) to “Hált” (slippery) at 17:46 local time. The road is classed as a standard road rather than a highland F-road.

Why this matters for photographers

Dynjandi is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland, and mid-October marks the start of serious winter driving conditions in the Westfjords. A status of “Hált” means the road surface is icy or otherwise slippery, which requires appropriate tyres and careful speed management. Autumn light and the possibility of early snow make this a rewarding but demanding destination at this time of year.

What photographers should do

  • Check the current road status on Vegagerðin’s website immediately before departure, as conditions in the Westfjords can change quickly and the road may close again without notice.
  • Ensure your rental vehicle is fitted with winter tyres, which are legally required in Iceland from 1 November but strongly advisable in the Westfjords from October onwards.
  • Reduce speed and increase following distances on the approach road; allow extra time so you are not rushing on a slippery surface in fading autumn light.

Dynjandi and its surrounding area are protected; keep to marked paths and do not approach the waterfall base or adjacent vegetation beyond designated viewing points.
