Iceland’s Met Office has issued orange and yellow weather warnings covering multiple regions of the country for Wednesday, 15 October 2026. A deep low-pressure system tracking over eastern Iceland is expected to bring storm-force easterly winds, heavy rain at lower elevations, and blizzard conditions in the mountains. Travel conditions will be poor or impossible across the country for much of the day, with the worst conditions in the Northwest and Northeast. The system is expected to clear by Thursday, with conditions improving considerably from Thursday afternoon.
Why this matters for photographers
Wednesday is effectively a write-off for travel to photography locations anywhere in Iceland. The Westfjords and Northwest Iceland face the most severe conditions, with northerly gale-force winds developing through the day as cold air moves in, dropping the snowline to near sea level by evening. Northeast Iceland, including the Mývatn and Dettifoss area, will also see blizzard conditions developing later in the day. Coastal shoots — including black sand beaches and glacier lagoons — carry particular risk given storm-force winds and heavy precipitation.
What photographers should do
- Do not attempt to drive to remote or highland locations on Wednesday; check road.is for real-time road closures before any journey, including on Thursday morning when residual snow may affect mountain routes.
- Use the day for gear preparation, reviewing images, or shooting in a sheltered urban setting — conditions improve considerably from Thursday afternoon.
- Monitor the Icelandic Met Office (vedur.is) on Wednesday morning for updated warning levels and any regional changes to the forecast before making plans for the following days.
