The road section over Fjarðarheiði pass (Kollafjarðarheiði) leading to Seyðisfjörður in East Iceland changed status to “Vegur ekki í þjónustu” (out of service) on 8 October 2026 at 17:46, according to Vegagerðin, the Icelandic Road Administration. This is a step beyond the previous status of passable for 4×4 and larger vehicles. No further comment has been issued by the road administration.
Why this matters for photographers
Seyðisfjörður is one of East Iceland’s most photographed locations, and the Fjarðarheiði pass is the only road access to the town. An “out of service” classification means the route is not maintained for travel and should not be driven regardless of vehicle type. October brings early snowfall and icing to mountain passes in the east, and conditions can deteriorate rapidly at this time of year.
What photographers should do
- Check the current road status directly on road.is before attempting to drive to Seyðisfjörður, as conditions may change without notice.
- If the pass remains out of service on your travel date, do not attempt it — there is no alternative road into the town.
- Monitor the Vegagerðin webcams for the pass and allow additional days in your itinerary for East Iceland to account for closures.
