Dyrhólaey road reopens after storm closure – 14 October

The road to Dyrhólaey lighthouse (Dyrhólaey, viti) in South Iceland, which had been closed due to storm conditions, was reclassified as passable (Greiðfært) by Vegagerðin, the Icelandic Road Administration, at 18:01 on 14 October 2026. No further comment was issued by the road authority.

Why this matters for photographers

Dyrhólaey is one of South Iceland’s most visited promontories, offering elevated views of the coastline, the black sand beaches below, and the sea arch itself. October brings low golden-hour light and the possibility of dramatic post-storm skies, making this a particularly rewarding time to visit. Storm closures in autumn can be sudden and short-lived, so confirming road status before departing is essential.

What photographers should do

  • Check the current road status at road.is before setting out, as conditions can change again quickly in October.
  • Arrive with sufficient time before sunset — use a light calculator to plan your window, as days shorten rapidly this month.
  • Allow extra travel time from Vík or Selfoss; roads may still be wet or slippery following a storm closure.

The clifftop and surrounding area are ecologically sensitive. Stay on marked paths and keep a respectful distance from any birds still present in October.
